The practice has an official name: Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring, or SMBP/HBPM. It's the subject of a joint policy statement from the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association, which lays out specific clinical guidance on doing it correctly.[3]

Per that guidance, taking multiple readings across different days at home is more reproducible than a single office reading -- partly because it sidesteps "white-coat" anxiety, which can spike a reading taken at the doctor's office, and it can also catch "masked" hypertension that looks normal in the office but isn't. The statement recommends home monitoring for essentially everyone being evaluated or treated for high blood pressure.[3] For reference, a home average of 135/85 mmHg or higher is generally treated as uncontrolled -- a different cutoff than the office reading, which is exactly why the two methods complement each other rather than replace one another.[4]
